Mahindra Group and Ford Motor Company have joined their hands to develop new SUVs, and electric vehicle for the Indian market. The SUVs they jointly develop, one of them will be a midsize one and the other model will be a compact SUV. Apart from the SUVs, both the companies are also preparing to develop an electric model. For this, both the companies have signed the MOU’s to share electric powertrains and connected car technologies. The new platform will be jointly developed by both the companies.
The SUV’s developed under this partnership will carry the platform developed from Mahindra under the Mahindra – Ssangyong program and used by Ford with Ford badge on it. Looking at the growth potential of the Indian EV market, Ford preparing to launch the electric variant of Aspire sedan using the Mahindra’s electric powertrain. While Mahindra is also preparing to launch the electric variant of KUV100 NXT and XUV500.
Back in 1995, Ford made its entry to the Indian Market as Mahindra-Ford with the Escort sedan. Cars like the Mondeo and the Ikon too were launched under the joint banner but Ford later split to become an independent automaker in India. Team from both companies will work together for a period of three years. While the American auto giant will get access to economies of scale and a lower cost structure from Mahindra’s new platform and Mahindra is expected to be benefitted from Ford’s world-class connected car technologies.
